People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is using sex in a big way in two different ads including one aimed at SeaWorld and another targeted for the Super Bowl that puts “deflategate” in a whole new light.
As the Union-Tribune’s Lori Weisberg wrote yesterday, the SeaWorld ad, which may or may not show up on a billboard near you, depicts a naked man having sex with a toy orca. The image is aimed at highlighting PETA’s objection to SeaWorld’s captive whale breeding practices.

The Super Bowl spot, which has already been rejected by ad executives as being too racy for television, promotes veganism, the practice of not eating or using animal products in any way. No butter, no mayo, no milk, no eggs, no cheese, no nada other than vegetable products and their derivatives.
The 38 second commercial shows two side-by-side clips of couples having sex. The guy on the left, labeled “meat eater” lasts only a few seconds until the frustrated woman gets up in a huff and the unfortunate burger, steak, pork chop, whatever, lover gets dressed and leaves.
Ah, but not only did he fail to perform, he meets an early demise, or at the very least, gets a big owie, after he gets hit in the head by a falling air conditioning unit. Presumably, that fate would not have befallen him if only he did not indulge in food that did not come from veggies.
But it’s a totally different story for the vegan couple who blissfully continue to have some pretty vigorous and noisy sex in several positions.
The video is on YouTube. If you go there and you are at work you should turn down the sound. You’re welcome.
The ad is accompanied by copy that says “Vegans last longer. See the side by side proof here.” It goes on to say that sleeping with someone who eats meat could be a big disappointment.
“Eating the saturated fat and cholesterol in meat can increase the risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and these can be dangerous to your love life. Why? Because they’re all common causes of erectile dysfunction. Plant-based foods keep blood flowing to all the body’s organs. The key to a hot love life and to lasting longer in the bedroom is to start with delicious vegan meals in the kitchen.”
On the group’s website, where the video is also posted, PETA officials wrote that a “deflategate” crisis is happening to men, not on the grid iron but in the bedroom and they invite folks to watch the play-by-play.
So far, almost 1.2 million people have taken them up on the offer.
This is not the first time PETA has used sex to promote its vegan agenda. In 2009, the ad “Veggie Love” featuring scantily clad women in the throes of ecstasy caused by broccoli, pumpkins and asparagus, was also banned from the airwaves. So were spots called “Milk Gone Wild,” “Sexy Sausage,” “Turkey Terror,” among others.
In a statement to Fortune Magazine,PETA said, “Super Bowl 50 audiences will be missing out on comedy, sex appeal, and the lifesaving message that vegan meals can help clear clogged-up carnivores and get their blood pumping again. PETA’s edgy but crowd-pleasing TV spot shows that vegans may have a banana in their pajama pocket, just to snack on later, but they’re also really pleased to see you.”
